Jewish Climate Change Campaign
Is Israel a "Jewish Organisation"?
The Jewish Climate Change Campaign calls for Jewish organisations large and small to create 'green teams' to implement a seven year plan to shift the way their organisation responds to climate change. After having already garnered 1795 signatories, and taken part in the impressive international conference at Windsor last week, it is clear that the Jewish environmentalists are becoming a powerful movement within the Jewish and non-Jewish world.
What if the State of Israel were to sign up? While many respected Israeli personalities and organisations are already signatories, what might be the impact of the entire State becoming one? What if the machinery of an entire state were to enter into the fray? Would this lead to the Jewish collective potential of Israel coming to fruition and impacting the world for the good?
While is is debatable whether our Prime Minister or President would be capable of making such an inspiring and witty speech in favor (see the text of Hazon's leader, Nigel Savage's speech at Windsor), might such a move reposition Israel as the environmental light unto the nations?
Or should the State keep out of the way, for fear of sullying the grass-roots energy of the campaign? For more
